The Office of International Affairs (OIA) of Duta Wacana Christian University (DWCU) held an event called Buddy Training Program on Saturday, May 13, 2017. This event was a follow up of Buddy Orientation Program that was held on January 2017. As more international students will come to visit DWCU, it is necessary for DWCU students to have understanding, knowledge and experience on how to become a “buddy” for those foreign students. Around twenty five people, including OIA staff and student staffs participated in the Buddy Training Program. OIA has recruited new student staffs early this year. The OIA hope through this program, the student staffs can learn not only theoretically, but also practicing what they have learned before.
In this one-day training program, participants visited Breksi Cliff Park and Monggo Chocolate Store and Museum. The group departed from DWCU campus at 07.00 in the morning. The first destination, Breksi Cliff is located in Groyokan, Blengkong, Sambirejo, Prambanan, Sleman Regency. It was a stone mining area until it became a recreational site, having been inaugurated in 2015 by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X as a cultural heritage. There are stairs going up the hill and decorative sculptures adorning the surface of the cliff which become tourist attraction to take some pictures. The second destination was Monggo Chocolate Store and Museum in Bangunjiwo, Kasihan, Bantul Regency. There, the participant got the opportunity to make their own chocolate and learned the history of chocolate around the world.
While exploring the sites, the participants of Buddy Training Program learned what they should do, what have to be prepared, and what should be considered when they become a tour guide for international students or university guests. Time management is an important thing as well as understanding the location. The participants were also taught to be considerate and to be flexible in different kind of situations.
